When to start weaning your breastfed child

So Aiden is 10 month old now and I will want to feed Aiden breast milk but I want to get him off the boob. As of a few weeks ago he has been more playing and biting (seeing how he has 6 teeth now). So I am trying to think of the best way to do this and could really use all the help I can get. I am thinking about giving him juice, water and almond milk over the next day so I can pump and then still feed him at night. Then once I get enough saved up I'll just cut him cold turkey during the day...?

I really don't want to give him formula and he can't have cow's milk. So I am hoping this might work. Does any one know of a good site that I can go read some info about it or do you have some good info for me. I would love to get all the help I can, and I shall let you know more in a week.

Definitely check out Kellymom but also look for ways to keep breastfeeding as it doesn't sound like you are ready to stop. I'm still nursing my 15 month old and we went thru a biting phase. Now the minute she starts messing around rather than eating I stop the session and get her distracted with a toy or show and wait for her to ask again. At 10 months we also started signing with her which helped me to know when she was really hungry and when she just wanted to snuggle. Good luck!!

I love kellymom as well. I think your idea is great, although I am wondering about how much juice/water you are going to give him until you can get a good supply of milk? I am a first-time mom as well, so I have no answers for you (sorry!), probably just more questions! I would love to know what you end up doing because I have an 8 month old daughter and she is getting the teeth!!

Oh yeah, I love your blog so I am your newest follower! If you want, please come check out my blog and follow if you choose :) ... Excited to get to know more moms in the blogosphere!

Blessings,

Tory

love kellymom.com for breastfeeding help. Instead of going cold turkey, I'd cut out the feeding he is least interested in. Maybe pump instead of that feeding to get a supply up for feeding him. After a couple of days with 1 session cut out, go ahead and cut out another. Again start with sessions that he won't miss as much (maybe mid morning, or mid afternoon...although each baby is different.) Going cold turkey can be painful for you (if you don't pump the milk), and hard on the child. If it is just the biting issue causing you to want to stop...look into advice to help that. I've noticed that either at the beginning of nursing or at the very end if I catch that he is distracted, I just stop the session. If he is biting, try repositioning him, and if he bites again. Stop and try a little while later. Those are some things that have really helped for me. Feel free to call if you have more questions.

Thanks for all the help and yes Heather I was going to pump and then feed him in a bottle, not just cut him off from all breast milk. Well I pumped once today and going to be pumping again he its his dinner time and give him the milk in the bottle. I'll post again in a week and let you all know how its going

I hear ya on the biting! I went through this with my youngest. Not fun! I did as others have suggested and started by cutting the feeding that he was least interested in. He was 11 months at the time and was taking a cup fairly well. I had some stored breast milk and gave him that in a cup. Honestly, he didn't seem to even notice. After about a week, I cut out another session. He did really well and by 12 months he only nursed before bed and had breastmilk in a cup the rest of the day. I then slowly started replacing the breastmilk with whole milk until my stash was used up. I hope it goes well for you!
