Daughter who won't take medicine

So my husband's been sick for a couple weeks now. On Tuesday he went to the doctor, and he has Strep Throat. I took Jerom to the Dr. Tuesday afternoon because he'd been fussy and having a runny nose. Turns out he has strep too. While at the Dr. they went ahead and tested Emarose and Me. Yep, the whole family is sick with strep throat! Jerom will take his medicine nicely, but Emarose our 4 year old wouldn't take it. We tried fighting her to force it down, but she put up such a fuss that none stayed down. Called Dr. office, and they said try mixing it with Chocolate syrup. So we tried that...still she wouldn't take it. I tried mixing it with Chocolate syrup and a little milk but still no luck. Finally we've been able to get her to drink the medicine mixed with chocolate syrup by having her drink it with a straw. It still takes about 10 min. though but at least she has taken her medicine yesterday and today. She gets something sweet afterwords to help get rid of the medicine taste and she gets to put a sticker on a chart. If she takes her medicine (mixed with Chocolate) 2x/day for 10 days then we will take her to get some wall stickers to decorate her room. Anyone else have a child who won't take medicine? What do you do?

My kids are better now but my almost 5 year old often refused medicine. We would bribe with a treat and that worked until first taste of medicine. She's fought us since she was a baby. Try holding down a 2 year old who is screaming non stop and trying to hurt you to give her a puffer because she needs it. Not fun.

Anyways, first time I've heard of chocolate syrup. Your child is old enough to start understanding that even though it tastes bad, it will stop the germs in his body. Explain if he doesn't take it, he will get more sick and have to go to the hospital to get medicine by IV (and explain what that is.) Don't expect him to all of a sudden be completely willing of course. LOL

My 5 year old with Autism will not take any medication unless it is hidden - we mix it in juice, chocolate milk, yogurt, and I've even squirted it into juice boxes through a medicinal syringe...

In a few years you'll be able to teach her how to swallow pills and the bad taste will go away for the most part... hopefully :-)

We put the medicine in her sippy or her regular couple. She is the worst taking medicine so I can really relate. I can't wait to do the day she can swallow pills. Oh, applesauce works too- just make she they don't see you doing it.
Mine went through a phase too. hiding it in other things only wasted it as she would not go for that. Sometime she would go for an m&M after. But most of the time we did the 2 person hold and put a little at the back of her throat at a time so she could not spit it out. She would gargle it unless we just shot it right at the back of her throat so she had to swallow as a reflex. That sucks!

My son hated taking medication but honestly, we just held him tight & gave him no alternative. There are just some things you have to do whether you want to or not.

we just went through this a few months ago...our 2 year old had a cough so bad and they wanted him on antibiotics...i had no idea you can ask at the pharmacy to flavor your kids medicine. our cvs here charges $1 to do it...we chose strawberry...but ultimately, we also had to use chocolate syrup! Good luck!
