Inside Out in theaters now

One fun way to spend time with my kids is to go to the movies. I had the opportunity to take my kids and a friend to see the movie Inside Out.

Inside out is a story about a girl named Riley. She is 11 years old and has just moved to California from Minnesota. Everything is different including the food. They even ruined pizza by putting broccoli on it. Yuck!

The movie shows the different emotions that we face in our lives. Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, and Fear. Joy's mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear heads up safety. Anger ensures all is fair. Disgust prevents Riley from getting poisoned physically and socially. Sadness really isn't sure what her role is , and nobody else seems to know what sadness's role is either.

The movie takes place in headquarters which is the control center inside Riley's head. The emotions are on the job to get Riley through the difficult move. However Joy and Sadness end up swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind. They take core memories with them. The core memories are what makes Riley have the personality she has. Joy and Sadness travel through Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract thought, and Dream production on their way to get back to headquarters and Riley.

I took an 8 year old girl, 7 year old girl, and almost 5 year old boy to see this. The 8 and 5 year old were glued to their seats the whole time. The 7 year old is not much of a movie watcher so she was a little fidgety but overall she watched most of the movie and didn't complain. (a huge win for her).

This movie speaks to all of your emotions. It had me crying in several instances. I felt connected to Riley and what she was going through. If you have ever been through a move than I'm sure these emotions will hit home with you.

Without Joy and Sadness in Headquarters Riley isn't her normal self. She makes choices that affect her core memories. Joy and Sadness need to hurry back to head quarters in order to make Riley happy once again. Joy is unable to return to headquarters without help from Sadness.

I'd say that my favorite part of the movie was the ending. All the feelings including Sadness discovered their purpose. They were working together as a team. It took all 5 emotions- Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, and Fear to make Riley the person that she is today.

I loved how this movie is appropriate for audiences of all ages. While it may be a kids show, I found it enjoyable to watch.  I would watch it again even without the kids.

So if you are ready to go on an emotional roller coaster ride. Go see Inside out!
