I have a leach!!!

Hi guys as you know I am a first time mommy and boy is there a lot to learn. I have two little problems that I am facing not that my son has hit 5 months. I am co bedding and he loves the boob. I started co bedding because it was really hard for me to get up at night sit in a chair and feed him. So I just had him lay next to me and eat if he needed it. Most of the time he will just fall asleep nursing and them wake up 6is hours later to eat again. But now that he is 5 months I am wondering when is the right time to start to get him into a crib and how do I do it. We have one room so the crib is in my bedroom and I can't have him cry himself to sleep because of when my husband works. I do put him in his crib to play sometime so he can get used to the idea of being in there.

So what I think I am going to start doing is getting him to sleep and then trying to move him over...? Have you had this problem before? Are you a co bedder?

The other problem I am facing is that he LOVES to nurse. I guess that really is not a bad thing. Other then its hard to get him on. Most of the time I am lying of the bed nursing him and trying to you all. I really want to breastfeed him for a year, but I am wondering at what point do I start to try and weaning him?

Still I must say I do not regret co bedding him or loving him as much as I do. He is my world and I have been waiting for him to come into my life for many years now. That and I am still not sure if I want to move him out yet......

Go read Sleep Number.... Baby to see how we did.

We co-sleep too, for the reason that you said about making breastfeeding easier. My little one is now 8 months and still doesn't sleep in a crib. Like you said, letting her cry it out isn't an option because our house is pretty small and it would definitely wake up my older child. Soooooo I'm not really sure how I'm going to switch her to the crib. Yikes!

Why does he have to sleep in a crib? My kids were 3, 7, and 10 when they stopped sleeping with me. Then I got remarried and new hubby said no way! Luckily for him I didn't kick HIM out. We're still married 11 years now :). I'm a new follower from Hop Along Friday Blog Hop. http://www.grandmasguidetolife.blogspot.com

Well he as never just fallen asleep in the crib, most of the time I just nurse him to sleep on the bed. I am going to start doing that then onces get gets to sleep move him over to the crib and see how he dose.

Caleb would not sleep in my bed. I tried, but he just wouldn't fall asleep. I have a friend who has co-slept with all 3 of her children and she was very helpful when I asked for advice. She has never used a crib for her kids. She transitioned them from her bed to a mattress on the floor. Like I said, I'm not expert, but maybe it's worth a shot?
I also loved having baby in bed because it was easier. According to Drs he should be able to sleep through the night without nursing around 6 months...which frankly will not happen if he is next to you (it's just too hard on mom and baby, at least in my experience). Maybe you can start having him take naps in his crib and let him cry it out then so he can get used to it. It really depends on how hard you want to work toward the crib.

After you start feeding him solids, he will probably start to naturally wean himself a little and over time he will nurse less & less. When I got close to a year with both of my boys I started replacing one breastfeeding with solids/milk, then waited a few days/week and took out another feeding until I just wasn't nursing anymore. Good luck!

Our daughter (she's now 5) slept with me for 18 months, I also breastfed her during those times but when I had to give birth to our second one that's when I weaned her. I breastfed my son for almost two years but we trained him to sleep in a crib. If you are just staying home or not working outside your home, you should at least nurse him for over a year. It is really good for the kids, for their immune system. My kids seldom get sick and they only had one ear ache in 6 years!

We cosleep and nurse on demand, and it is hard, but these days are so few, your baby will grow so fast, just enjoy it! Nothing lasts forever, and he won't cosleep till college, I promise!
